Good healing after dental implant surgery depends on protecting the surgical site while the bone and soft tissue begin to heal. At ABC Dental Care in Las Vegas, post-operative instructions are individualized to the procedure performed. A straightforward single implant, an implant placed with bone grafting, and a full-arch immediate-load case may require different precautions.

The instructions given to you by your treating dentist should take priority over general information online. The guidance below explains the principles Dr. John Walker emphasizes after implant treatment.

The first 24 to 48 hours after implant surgery

Some soreness, swelling and minor oozing can be expected after implant surgery. Swelling commonly increases during the first couple of days before beginning to improve. Use medications exactly as directed by your treating clinician and follow any procedure-specific instructions regarding ice, rinsing and activity.

Avoid repeatedly disturbing the surgical area with your tongue or fingers. Vigorous rinsing, forceful spitting, smoking, vaping and other actions that traumatize the site can interfere with early healing. If you received sedation, follow the separate restrictions provided for driving, decision-making and supervision.

What should you eat after a dental implant?

Diet depends partly on the type of implant treatment. In general, begin with foods that require minimal chewing and avoid placing unnecessary pressure directly over a fresh surgical site. As healing progresses, the diet can usually be advanced according to comfort and the stability of the restoration.

This is especially important with immediate-load and full-arch implant treatment. Having fixed provisional teeth the day of surgery does not mean the implants are ready for unrestricted chewing. During early osseointegration, excessive functional forces can jeopardize healing. Patients with an immediate full-arch prosthesis should follow the specific soft-diet and chewing instructions provided by the surgical-restorative team.

Cleaning around a new implant

Keeping the mouth clean is important, but a fresh surgical site should not be scrubbed aggressively. Follow your dentist’s instructions regarding when to begin brushing near the site and whether a prescribed or recommended rinse should be used. Sutures, grafted areas and temporary prostheses can change how the area should be cleaned during the first phase of healing.

Once healing permits, plaque control becomes increasingly important. The long-term goal is not simply to keep the implant fixture integrated; it is to maintain healthy tissue and bone around the implant and a restoration that can be cleaned effectively.

What is normal and what should concern you?

Expected post-operative symptoms generally improve rather than progressively worsen. Contact the treating office if you develop severe or increasing pain, swelling that continues to worsen after the expected early period, persistent or heavy bleeding, drainage or pus, fever or other systemic symptoms, a bad taste associated with the surgical area, a change in the bite, or mobility of an implant restoration.

If something feels loose, do not assume the implant itself has failed. A healing abutment, temporary crown, prosthetic screw or other restorative component can loosen while the implant fixture remains integrated. Our guides to dental implant abutments and failed or problematic dental implants explain why identifying the moving component matters. The distinction requires an examination.

Osseointegration happens below the surface

An implant can feel comfortable before the bone has completed the biologic process of integrating with its surface. For that reason, absence of pain is not permission to disregard dietary or functional restrictions. Healing time varies according to the site, bone quality, grafting, implant stability, medical factors and the restorative plan.

Follow-up visits allow the dentist to evaluate soft-tissue healing, the restoration, bite and other clinical factors before progressing to the next phase of treatment. If you are still deciding whether implant treatment is appropriate, our overview of dental implant risks and warning signs explains factors that can affect healing and long-term maintenance.

Long-term implant maintenance

Dental implants require ongoing maintenance. After the surgical phase, professional examinations and hygiene visits help monitor plaque accumulation, inflammation, probing findings when appropriate, bone levels, occlusion and restorative components. Home-care techniques should be matched to the restoration: cleaning a single implant crown is different from cleaning beneath an implant-supported bridge or full-arch prosthesis.

Patients with a history of periodontal disease, smoking or nicotine exposure, difficult-to-clean prosthetic contours, heavy bite forces or other risk factors may require a more individualized maintenance interval.

Implant follow-up at ABC Dental Care

Dr. Walker’s implant practice includes single-tooth implants, implant-supported overdentures and full-arch treatment. His approach is to plan the surgical and restorative phases together and continue monitoring the implant after placement rather than treating surgery as the end of care. When indicated, 3D CBCT imaging can also help evaluate implant sites and complications in relation to surrounding anatomy.

If you recently had implant treatment at ABC Dental Care and have a concern about your healing, call the office rather than waiting for a routine visit. If you had an implant placed elsewhere and something does not feel right, we can evaluate the implant and restoration and discuss what we find. If you are considering dental implants in Las Vegas, call 702-228-1701 to schedule an implant evaluation.
